Profile

ASM Terni is fully owned by the local municipality (City of Terni). The activity of the company is related to some public services in the City of Terni area as:

  • Production and distribution of Electric Energy
  • Gas distribution
  • Management of public street lighting
  • Environmental Health
  • Drinkable water distribution and water treatment plant

ASM TERNI owns and operates the local power distribution network, covering a surface of 211 km2 and delivering about 400 GWh to 65,100 customers annually. Nowadays, the ASM electric grid is characterized by a large number of distributed renewable energy sources embedded in the medium and low voltage distribution networks: 41 plants (59% biomass-biogas, 36% photovoltaic, 5% hydro) and 690 solar photovoltaic (PV) units are currently connected directly to the medium voltage (MV) and low-voltage (LV) distribution networks, respectively, reaching the total installation load of 70 MW. Moreover, a state-of-the-art SCADA system is currently used in remote control of MW network. The capillary penetration of the RES transformed the MV/LV distribution grid from a purely passive network – which, being operated in radial direction, is characterized by mono-directional power flows (i.e. from the HV grid to final users) – into an active grid with significant bidirectional flows (i.e. from active users to the HV grid).

Since August 1, 2007, ASM Terni also participates in the Umbria Distribuzione Gas S.p.A. company formed by Italgas S.p.A. (45%), ASM Terni S.p.A. (40%) and ACEA S.p.A. (15%), aiming to entrust management of the natural gas distribution service in the city of Terni. The concession for the management of natural gas distribution was assigned to Umbria Distribuzione Gas S.p.A. by tender brought by the Municipality of Terni with validity equal to 12 years. The municipality of Terni network extends for about 360 Km of pipes with a number of Utilities fastened almost equal to 50,000 units.

Regarding the water supply network and wastewater treatment, the ASM TERNI’s water distribution system serves 86,000 customers covering an area of 1,250 km2. On average 23.2×106 m2 of clean water are pumped into 1,400 km of pipe and 180 reservoirs annually and the network is operated by a remote-control system. As to wastewater treatment, ASM TERNI manages two Sewage Treatment Works in the city of Terni (150,000 and 20,000 population equivalent), 72 Works in the surrounding area and 130 Imhoff tanks.

Role in the project

ASM will provide significant assistance towards the requirement analysis and the refinement of the use cases and KPIs, as well as towards the verification framework benchmarking and GDPR compliance, and finally will contribute to the alignment with the future technological generation.

Additionally, ASM will lead the Smart Energy use case. The main goal is the development of a Smart Grid Active Monitoring/ Control at real-time using federated ML hosted locally on IoT nodes. ASM will also participate in the validation of the cross-living labs and 3rd party support, along with the use cases validation and replication guidelines. Finally, ASM will contribute in IoT-NGIN’s dissemination and exploitation activities.
