Developers of the Internet of Things (IoT) face a fragmented landscape consisting of very different devices. These range from bare metal devices to those equipped with powerful support for AI and with built-in hardware (HW) to implement Root of Trust (RoT) and Trusted Execution Environments (TEE). Their coexistence guarantees an acceptable level of security across the whole system but avoiding attacks remains an open challenge. The existence of many HW platforms prevents, or makes very difficult, interoperation of applications and security services.
The EU-funded CROSSCON project aims to address secure Chain of Trust (CoT) issues by designing a new open, modular, highly portable, and vendor-independent Internet of Things (IoT) security stack that can run on a wide range of devices. Since modern IoT devices can use heterogeneous hardware architectures, CROSSCON also aims at enhancing the traditional trusted services offered by existing TEEs.
CROSSCON’s stack will guarantee trusted services with a high level of assurance across an entire IoT system. These services will rely on CoT that spans from chip design, through open-source instruction set architectures, to the application layer, wherever trusted services are required.
